Safina Will Return to No. 1 in Two Weeks
Serena Williams may be No. 1 now, but it’s not going to last. Serena, who just pulled ahead of Dinara by five points this week, will simply have to do better than Dinara in Doha at the end of the month if she wants to finish the year No. 1.
With neither player scheduled to compete between now and the start of the year-end event in Doha, both players will drop their 2008 points from Qatar on the 26th (by rule, year-end event pts drop at the start of the tournament).
Serena will lose 370 points, Dinara 210 which gives Safina a 155pt lead (370-210=160, 160-5=155) entering Doha. That may sound like a lot, but it isn’t because each round-robin win is worth 160 points.
So whoever goes the furthest in Doha gets No. 1 with a tie going to Dinara.
