Good or Bad? Henin Already a Finalist on the WTA
That didn’t take long. After an 18 month absence from women’s tennis, former World No. 1 Justine Henin returned this past week in Sydney and already she’s reached a tournament final. Not only that, she held two matchpoints to Kim Clijsters, the most recent Slam winner on the women’s tour!
Is that suppose to happen? Is the WTA so weak a circuit that players like Kim and Justine can miss considerable amounts of time and not lose a beat?
Henin lost earlier today to Clijsters in a third set breaker - she was down a set and a break before Clijsters let her back in - in the Brisbane final.
Despite the loss, the fact Henin is already reaching finals in her first event signifies she’s going to be in many more this season. It’s also a good tell for Clijsters who’ll go into the Melbourne among the Top 3 favorites to win there (might she even be the fav?).
Next up for Justine potentially is Serena Williams Tuesday or Wednesday in the second round of Sydney. Serena gets a first round bye while the unseeded Henin must deal with the longest name in the WTA book, Maria Jose Sanchez Martinez. What a match if it happens! My gut tells me it won’t.
